Truest statement of the week

This presidential election season bears a striking resemblance to that of 2016. We were assured by pundits, pollsters, Democratic politicians, and million dollar consultants that Donald Trump couldn’t possibly win. Except he did win and the aforementioned experts should have been discredited and forgotten.
Four years later the same people who should have been ignored forever are again claiming that Trump is on the ropes. The endless and useless anti-Trump talking points have done their damage. People who ought to know better glean dubious evidence and think that wishing for Trump’s exit will get him out of the White House. At the same time, Joe Biden’s campaign is fully within the sphere of right wing neo-liberalism which lost in 2016.

The confused and misguided “resistance” focused on crowd size at Trump’s Tulsa, Oklahoma rally and happily concluded from this paltry evidence that he will lose. The nonsense is peddled by Democratic Party propagandists to keep voters in line and to prevent them from expressing righteous indignation after their failures in 2016.
While millions of people whistle past the electoral graveyard, Joe Biden attacks Trump from the right. After Trump indicated a willingness to engage in talks with Venezuelan president Nicholas Maduro, Biden tweeted  his displeasure. “Trump talks tough on Venezuela, but admires thugs and dictators like Nicolas Maduro. As President, I will stand with the Venezuelan people and for democracy.” It is Barack Obama who began the assault on the Venezuelan people. It is fitting that his former vice president is happy to continue Trump’s sanctions, which are war by other means resulting in over 40,000 deaths.

Truest statement of the week II

Biden is happy that COVID-19 prevents him from having large scale rallies. He is without a constituency, charisma or any platform positions that would attract more voters. It is open to question if he could attract a crowd of any size at this moment.

Editorial: Who will speak out on behalf of the Kurds?

Turkey continues to terrorize Iraq.  They insist they're attacking the PKK but it is the civilians they are being attacked, terrorized, scared, injured and killed.

Dana Taib Menmy (MIDDLE EAST EYE) reports:

Turkish air strikes against alleged PKK targets in northern Iraq have caused civilian casualties and spread fear in refugee camps in the area, residents and officials have told Middle East Eye.
On Sunday 14 June, Turkey's Defence Ministry announced the launch of a large aerial operation dubbed “Operation Claw-Eagle”, nominally targeting the strongholds of the PKK in Qandil, near the Iranian-Turkish border, as well as Zap, Avasin and Hakurk, Sinjar and Makhmour.
The ministry claimed that “81 PKK targets were struck, including shelters and caves”, and that a large number of PKK militants had been "neutralised". But civilians told Middle East Eye that most of the air strikes in Sinjar - home of the embattled Yazidi minority - and Makhmour refugee camp, targeted civilians.

The Makhmour camp in north-central Iraq was first established in 1998 and hosts more than 12,000 refugees, mainly composed of Kurds fleeing the long-running conflict between the Turkish state and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), who have their bases in the Qandil mountains in northern Iraq.

People lives are at risk and the world looks the other way -- not the first time, by the way.  Jasmine reminds:

hey y’all in 1915 Turkey committed genocide against Assyrians and guess what!! They’re doing it again!! In 2020!! In Iraq!! Our people are still being eradicated and no ones batting an eye!!!! #turkeyisguilty

Observers are noting who is playing silent.  For example, Mekut Tweets:

Newly appointed Iraq's foreign minster Fuad Hussein (KDP) hasn't uttered a word about Turkey's aggression, terrorising our countryside and murdering civilians, but on Libya: We reject interfering in Lybia's internal affairs.
12:51 PM · Jun 23, 2020

Also silent?

Iraq's prime minister.  Does Mustafa al-Kadhimi think his silence makes him look strong?  It doesn't.  As he's unable to provide jobs, as the death toll from the coronvirus continues to climb, as he accomplishes nothing, he just looks even weaker.

Christian Peacemaker Teams, USCIRF, the Arab League, the UAE, Egypt and Saudi Arabia have all condemned the actions of the Turkish government.  It's a small list that needs to grow.

TV: Where's the pride?

Original content? Sometimes about the only thing nice you can say is: Well it's new content.

3 JESS

We thought about that as we suffered through LOVE, VICTOR. HULU decided to do a TV series out of the film LOVE, SIMON. And they brought along all the baggage from the film.

You may remember Jennifer Garner and other stars of the film tried to pimp the movie. BLACK PANTHER had done incredible at the box office for many reasons, The people behind LOVE, SIMON suspected one reason for the film's success was that BLACK PANTHER was being pushed as a film with a person of color playing an admired comic book hero. Outside of Wesley Snipes in the BLADE films, that had not happened.

In the crazy world where Jennifer Garner has some sort of career despite so-so talents, it seemed logical to tell people that they should see LOVE SIMON because it was about a gay person.

Here's the thing, and we objected in real time, Chadwik Boseman played Black Panther (and did so with an amazing performance). Boseman is a person of color.

LOVE, SIMON? It starred boxy Nick Robinson as a gay man. But, here's the problem (pay attention, Jennifer), Nick Robinson is not gay (or, if he is gay, he's in the closet).

The idiots didn't get it. They still don't.

LOVE, VICTOR is supposed to instill gay pride. How?

Michael Cimino stars as high schooler Victor who, yes, is gay.

And, if this were 1992, that might be something. But it's not 1992, it's 2020.

How can a series preach gay pride or even just tolerance (we've never been fans of tolerance) when the gay character is played by a straight actor (judging by his INSTAGRAM)?

If being gay is okay (and we agree that it is), why are you casting straight actors in the role?

Anybody remember IN AND OUT? One of the jokes in the movie is that Matt Dillon's straight character plays -- and wins an Oscar for playing -- a gay character. That was funny in 1997. In 2020, it's just sad.

Let's move to acting. Michael plays Victor like a paper doll wall flower. There's no substance and he's always peering out of shy eyes. Is this what he thinks gay is? He keeps saying, in interview after interview, that he spoke to his gay cousin. You know what would be better than that? Actually casting a gay person in the role. Michael seems to confuse "gay" with "girlish." We're not sure why that is but it's how he plays the role. Maybe the Simon aspect has him confused he's Felicity? In that 90s show, a framing device was Felicity's conversations with Sally (played off camera by Janeane Garofalo). Victor's pathetic. He doesn't even know his Sally. His Sally would be Simon.

How does he know Simon? He doesn't. He knows of him. And after he moves to Simon's town and is too scared to say "I'm gay," he sends Simon a high drama message. Simon replies and you know this is bad TV because the reply doesn't begin, "Take the stick out of your ass . . ." Simon puts up with one message after another as Victor says insulting things like he wants to be "normal" (being gay isn't?) and whines and whines some more. Maybe Victor's easier to endure long distance? Or maybe Simon's just waiting for the face-to-face to pull the Cher MOONSTRUCK move ("Snap out of it!" -- declared with a vigorous slap)?

Kick in the pants?

Victor needs something. Not since Sammy graced the big screen in REALITY BITES has a gay character been such a sad sack and do nothing.

He's a teenage boy. Is there a reason he doesn't come across that way? Is there a reason that the teenage girl he's pretending to be interested in is hornier than he is? Is Victor so 'pure' that he's the only teenage boy in the country who's not at his sexual peak?

Victor is paper thin. He's not a character, he's a wafer. And we're not in the mood for communion.

We didn't think we were in the mood for THE POLITICIAN. However? Season two is a huge step forward from season one.

Let's start with Bette Midler. Reviewing season one, we noted:

All these actors may inspire on the stage. But put a camera on them and they add up to nothing -- minutes and minutes of nothing.
In fairness, we should note that even Bette Midler fails. Nathan Lane in THE BIRDCAGE didn't mince and mug as much as Bette does in her small role here.
This is a soap opera done as high camp so it's hard to go too far over the top but somehow Bette manages to. She's so far out there, it's as though her scenes were filmed on Neptune.

Did the writers adapt to Bette or did she adapt to them? We don't know -- but we'd guess they adapted to her. Bette is amazing. That's not open to debate. We were blown away. Bette kicked it up so high, we wouldn't quibble if she was nominated for an Emmy for this performance, she's truly amazing.

As is Judith Light but when has Judith Light ever phoned it in? She is both one of the country's strongest actresses and one of the most underestimated ones as well. And when you team Bette hitting every note correctly with Judith Light, you've got TV worth watching and then some. Joe Morton and Teddy Sears grab a few moments in the storylines they share with Judith and Bette but it really is the two women carrying the show.

In a lesser role, Gwyneth Paltrow continues to shine.

Not everyone's worthy of praise. Ben Platt, for example, needs to grow up. That's his portrayal of the character, that's his chest. He's supposed to be in law school, no longer in high school, so why is he waxing his chest? Better question, every time he's shirtless and moving his arms, his pit hair looks like it belongs to a yeti, so why did he leave that overgrown shrubbery in place while mowing down the chest hair? Ben's Payton sometimes comes across even more youthful than Victor. Exteriors would really help him find the character.

There is no character to find in the Greek Chorus. The ones who follow Payton around still haven't developed personalities and they look ridiculous. Outside of Ben Rhodes, who is pathetic enough to make their life about serving a politician? At least Astrid gets some sex out of it -- maybe Ben Rhodes did too?

Ben Platt needs to be getting something out of this show. He's personable, he's sexy, his NETFLIX musical special was first-rate. Why isn't he better on THE CANDIDATE? We think the reason may be Ryan Murphy. At its best, THE CANDIDATE soars in season two. But it really trips up repeatedly with Peyton. Is Peyton based on Ryan Murphy? With the Greek chorus following Peyton around, we're reminded of many bad first plays where the playwright creates a 'character' based on themselves and there is no 'character' there. Instead, there's some sort of idealized version of a person that is unplayable. Is THE CANDIDATE supposed to provide an interesting story or be an actualization lesson? Peyton was actually less noble in season one -- and more interesting.

What saves season two of THE CANDIDATE is the strong performances from Bette and Judith and the fact that their storyline is easily half the season. Nothing saves LOVE, VICTOR and nothing can. If your message is that it's "okay" to be gay, then why can't you cast an out actor in the role? Until you do that, you're sending mixed messages and that's nothing to be proud of -- especially not during Pride Month.

John Bolton is a War Criminal, he is not your friend

We got an e-mail from Jody telling us he liked us "so much better when you were Democrats." What does he think we are now? Bogans?

Whatever he thinks we are, we'd argue that some of the people posing as Democrats are actually not.

Meaning? You can't cheer War Criminal John Bolton and be a Democrat. You can do that and be a hypocrite. John Bolton is a known liar. He is a War Monger. Tom Hayden considered John a War Criminal and that was something we never disagreed with Tom over.

John Bolton supposedly bares all in a new book and we're supposed to embrace him?

johnboltonwantstoshare

The corporate press is no help.  They offer garbage even when they dress it up with a headline like  "Joe Biden Is Wondering Why John Bolton Suddenly Likes Him."

Sadly, it's not a statement from Joe, nor is it an honest reflection on War Criminal John Bolton.  It's just useless chatter from two NYT columnists who don't have much in their brains. Harsh?

It is the height of stupidity to insist that Michelle Obama should be Joe Biden's running mate. Joe Biden could die in office. He could be a one-term president who decides not to seek re-election. The Democrats are in the same position that John McCain left the Republican Party in during the 2008 race.  In fact, Joe Biden's health is much worse than McCain's and he had to choose someone young and with experience.

Sarah Palin was the Governor of Alaska when she was picked.  What public office has Michelle held?  What election has she ever won?  What in her background reassures America that if Joe was elected and dropped dead in his first 100 days, Michelle would be ready to be president?

This is the garbage our press provides.

That includes encouraging celebration of John Bolton.

John Bolton is not the left's friend.  He is not the center's friend.  He is not even a friend to Republicans.  He is death and he is destruction and he should not be welcomed by anyone with all the blood on his hands.

Don't get it twisted, John Bolton is a War Criminal.  As Seth Harp (ROLLING STONE) pointed out last year:

A hawk is a medium-sized bird of prey, a noble animal that plays a vital role in many ecosystems.
John Bolton, by contrast, is a war criminal, a man better described as a black-pilled, death-worshipping ghoul drenched in the blood of Muslim children than compared to an elegant specimen of the family Accipitridae.
If there were justice in the world, Bolton would be handed over to the Iraqi government, perhaps for them to do as the Israelis did to Eichmann. He’s not an international pariah on par with Rumsfeld or Rove, but he’s easily as culpable as Wolfowitz, Perle, Feith, or Libby in the fraudulent invasion and catastrophic occupation of Iraq, a disaster that eventually spilled over into Syria, and now has people literally fleeing into the ocean. Unlike some architects of the Iraq war, who had the decency to disappear from public life, Bolton continued to unapologetically defend the con job he did as George W. Bush’s ambassador to the United Nations, even as he tirelessly agitated for war with Iran and North Korea and Venezuela as Trump’s national security advisor.

Dear THIRD ESTATE SUNDAY REVIEW, you used to cover comic books. What happened? Sincerely, Margaret.

We did it. We did it and then we were done. We got to cover the first issue of BATWOMAN in DETECTIVE COMICS -- Jess, Dallas, Dona and Isaiah got to meet Greg Rucka and that was the high point.

Batwoman autographed

We continued to cover BATWOMAN and we added WONDER WOMAN and others. But then CIA Gloria Steinem had to go and screw things up. Her public tantrum when Princess Diana's origin story was changed was embarrassing. If you missed it, Princess Diana was given a father: Zeus. And it was all too much for Gloria's weak mind. She had to object, she had to. She acts like she owns Wonder Woman, have you noticed? And she never has anything to say about Wonder Woman unless she's complaining. We could care less whether Wonder Woman has a father or not. But while Gloria was playing the fool, Wonder Woman was in the midst of the best storyline she'd had in years. It was just frustrating and we were trying to be kind to the elderly idiot Gloria. But it soured us on it and we really haven't gone back to covering it. Also true, we tend to try to do some new stuff. We have to do The TESR Test Kitchen because it's just too popular and it's a ''short feature'' which Dona always wants us to do (and Dona may be the one who came up with the idea). We might do comics again some day.

THIRD, will you be doing a fiction edition this summer? Thanks, Joe.

Our lives have become a fiction edition -- a horror story as we try to make it through the pandemic. We had a really rough time the last time we attempted that so we probably won't try again.

Dear TESR, I love Ava and C.I.'s commentaries. Is anyone going to be upset if I print them up in a hardbound collection? - Nina.

Not at all. We need to do the same here.

Dear THIRD ESTATE SUNDAY REVIEW, Where's the art? You used to do so many illustrations but not really so much now. Thank you, Bobby

You are absolutely right. But we did some paintings this edition. They aren't dry yet so they may not get used this edition. But we agree we are slacking on that front and we want to be sure we stop that.

THIRD, I get it, you don't want to repeat. But a collage doesn't have to be a repeat. It doesn't have to be a MY FASCIST HOUSE collage. I like collages and doesn't Jim always say "short pieces! short pieces!" Sincerely, Bill

We like your idea, Bill. Let us play with it a bit. But it's Dona, not Jim, who always shouts "Short pieces!"

3rd, I used to like you guys so much better when you were Democrats. Whatever, Jody

Jody, Jess is part of THIRD and he was always a Green. Ann helps with the editions and she's a Green -- always has been. So we're confused as to when we were all Democrats? Maybe you mean when we were nicer to Democrats? We used to be nice to, for example, Nancy Pelosi. But she shucked and jived on the Iraq War. It's not our fault that she turned out to be insincere. The Iraq War was used by too many Democrats to try to motivate people to vote. They talked big about ending it but they didn't mean it and that's why there are still US troops on the ground in Iraq.

You guys are stupid and Tara Reade is a liar. F.U., Boyce.

Well, Boyce, thanks for sharing. We do not believe that Tara Reade lied about Joe Biden assaulting her. We believe Tara. If you don't, you should write about that. Create a website and write all about it.

Hey 3rd, I think you were too kind to COUNTERSPIN recently. Just saying, Anne.

Anne, we actually agree. We thought they would comment or reply. They've been thrilled to e-mail us privately in the past. We were e-mailing them for a comment of some form, trying to be fair. We won't bother with that ever again. There's nothing fair about FAIR. It's an incestuous organization where a married couple has destroyed whatever was left of the organization. Again, you are right, Anne, we were too kind.

Dear Third, after Ava and C.I.'s TV reporting, my favorite pieces are Jim's World. Can we get that a little more often? Yours truly, Rachel.

Oh, Jim's head is going to be swelling. Do you know that in the last year, every time you have had a Jim's World, it was because of Ava and C.I. As they have been asked to do this or that in edition after edition, they've taken to saying to Jim, "Okay and since we're doing that, we're guessing you're going to do a Jim's World this edition?"
