PA Greens call for divestment from the war machine

The Green Party of Pennsylvania (GPPA) Steering Committee has endorsed and joined the new coalition, Divest from the War Machine. The purpose of Divest from the War Machine is "removing invested assets from companies that derive their profits from U.S. military interventions, the global arms trade, and the militarization of our streets."

Alan Smith, co-chair of GPPA from Chester County, explained, "A year to the day before he was killed, April 4, 1967, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his "Beyond Vietnam" speech. On the anniversary of that speech, Code Pink and the Black Alliance for Peace with Ajamu Baraka, 2016 Green Party nominee for vice president, co-sponsored the new coalition, Divest from the War Machine."

"In his speech," continued Smith, "King railed against racism, materialism and militarism calling for a revolution of values. The U.S. is heavily invested in these three things which oil the war machine. War and violence are used to protect the property of the ruling class and perpetuate their interests. The Pentagon budget is $1 trillion. The U.S. is the number one arms trader on the planet. The U.S. has over 1,000 military bases occupying 160 out of the 196 countries. Corporate and financial institutions are heavily invested in racism, materialism and militarism. Democrats and Republicans, including the Trump administration, all support the expansion of the military. A commitment to people, planet and peace is at the heart of the Green Party. We stand against racism, materialism and materialism. We must divest financially, intellectually, culturally, and emotionally from those things that run the war machine. No more oil for the war machine!"

The Divest from the War Machine coalition says, "We are demanding that our universities, religious organizations, individual investors, retirement funds, mutual funds, and other financial institutions stop making a killing on killing."

Chris Robinson, a GPPA delegate from Philadelphia, offered some background, "There is a rejuvenation of the peace movement taking place through new coalitions like Divest from the War Machine and Black Alliance for Peace. These organizations give Green Party members a chance to live the Green Party platform. One of the Green Party's four pillars is 'peace.' I plan to work closely with Divest Philly from the War Machine to demonstrate how the Green Party differs from the war parties."

The Green Party is an independent political party that stands in opposition to the two corporate parties. GPPA candidates promote public policy based on the Green Party four pillars: grassroots democracy, nonviolence, ecological wisdom, and social justice/equal opportunity. Leader McCarthy’s Statement on Special Counsel Mueller’s Report

Can the long nightmare end and the country focuses on real issues now?  We hope so.  Here's House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's statement:

March 24, 2019

Washington, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) issued the following statement regarding the Special Counsel’s report.
“Our country welcomes this long-overdue conclusion. After two years, two congressional investigations, and now the closure of a Special Counsel investigation with unfettered authority to investigate ‘any links or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the Campaign of President Donald Trump,’ it is abundantly clear, without a shadow of a doubt, there was no collusion. Furthermore, the nearly unlimited scope, resources, and subpoena power of the Special Counsel hasallowed his team to fully pursue any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation. This case is closed.
“As we officially close this chapter, it is important for us to learn from the moment. As we look back, Democrat leaders acted irresponsibly and threw caution to the wind to damage and distract from the work the Trump administration is doing on behalf of our fellow citizens. While this conclusion is an embarrassment to those Democrats, it is more discouraging to think of the opportunity costs to our country.
“This should be a lesson to my Democrat colleagues that chasing imagined scandals and following a partisan investigatory agenda will not result in any meaningful change for the country. In fact, it will do the opposite. I understand that Democrats today are struggling with their own deep divisions and that it might be easier to attack President Trump than work together for a common cause. But after months upon months of manufactured outrage on this issue, it is time we move on for the good of the nation and focus on the job we were sent to Washington to do: work to address the real challenges facing our country.”

Truest statement of the week

Now, at the 16-year mark, the war’s smoking ruins remain. In March 2019 the Associated Press’ Qassim Abdul-Zahra reported that the Islamic State group, while losing its last shred of territory in Syria, was creeping back into Iraq. Moreover, tens of thousands Iraqis remained displaced, large areas of the country were in ruins, corruption was rampant, infrastructure remained crumbled, armed militias continued to roam the streets of Baghdad, and unemployment, poverty and disenfranchised youth were widespread.

-- Joseph Wyatt, "The Iraq War at 16" (CHARLESTON GAZETTE-MAIL).

Truest statement of the week II

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Powell and the others who had manufactured from whole cloth the reasons for their war, would repeatedly employ transparent efforts to shore up their ebbing hopes for favorable legacies. Employing verbal devices, they would slyly switch the reasons for the invasion, moving away from their earlier certainties of WMDs to espousing new rhetoric about Saddam’s “plans” or “ambitions” to develop such weapons.

-- Joseph Wyatt, "The Iraq War at 16" (CHARLESTON GAZETTE-MAIL).

A note to our readers

Tuesday night.  The 16th anniversary of the start of the never-ending Iraq War.

And what did we come up with?

Joseph Wyatt gets a truest.
In fact, he gets two.
In less than an hour, the Iraq War hits the sixteen year mark.  Can you believe it?  We can't either.  When we started this site in 2005, we assumed we'd have ended it long before now but then we also assumed the Iraq War would have ended long before now.
Ava and C.I. cover TV.
Don't forget them, they have really betrayed us and betrayed peace.
Is it our longest roundtable?  It felt that way.  Thank you to everyone who participated, we did it Monday night and we knew it put a lot of people off schedule.  Thank you to everyone.
We limited it to three -- it could have been much, much longer.
This is a topic that we've long planned to cover.

What we listened to.
As always, thank you to Mike & the gang for writing this.

Hey, we love you readers, we really do.  But 16 years from now we better not all be here talking about the 32nd anniversary of the still ongoing Iraq War.

Peace and love to the Iraqi people, peace and love to all non-Iraqis around the world who have fought in the Iraq War or lost loved ones in the Iraq War.  May this war and occupation end and end soon.

As the one and only Melanie Safka sings, till they all come home . . .

Peace,

-- Jim, Dona, Ty, Jess, Ava and C.I.

Editorial: 16 years

Despite promises and hopes and protests and demands and costs financial and costs in blood, the Iraq War hits the 16 year mark in about an hour.

16 years going and no end in sight.

If you're running for president right now, you might try articulating how this war ends because, thus far, it doesn't.

Happy birthday, Iraq war. You’re old enough to drive now.

16 years.  And now it's going to be 16 years and counting.

How can you run for president and not address this issue?

You can't.  Not if you want us to take you seriously.

So far, US House Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is the strongest.

  1. “So you ask what I will change? I will change our priorities so we stop wasting trillions of our dollars on wasteful counterproductive wars and dedicate them to taking care of the urgent needs of our communities across this country.”

The Iraq War has to end.  If you can't figure out how to make that happen, you shouldn't be running for president.
