Books (Marcia, Isaiah, Ava and C.I.)

1summerread

As we did in 2021 and 2023 and 2024, we're attempting to again increase book coverage in the community. This go round, we're talking with Marcia and Isaiah.  Marcia's "Books, Shatner and more" about STAR TREK actor William Shatner's most recent memoir BOLDLY GO  and Isaiah's "BATMAN'S VILLAINS" about a DC paperback collection of five stories about Batman's villains.

Marcia: Didn't realize I was doing a book review until Betty told me I had.  But she's right.  I'm the one who wanted us to continue the book coverage and I did point out that a book review didn't need to be multiple paragraphs.  It can be brief.  And William Shatner's book only deserved a brief mention.

It was his 11th memoir?

Marcia: Yes.  That's more than enough.  If he needs to do another book, he can.  But don't do a memoir.  What he should do is season one of the TV show STAR TREK.  Watch those episodes and write a chapter on each one.  That would be an interesting book, as he reflected on them.  And then, if he wanted to do another book, go with season two.  But not another memoir.

Not even if he focused instead on TJ HOOKER?

Marcia: Not even if he focused on TJ HOOKER.

Isaiah, you did a paperback of comic books.

Isaiah: Right, five Batman villains.

And you don't like Penguin.  Ty got an e-mail on that so we have to ask why?

Isaiah: He just bored me.  Even on the TV show from the sixties.  I liked The Joker, The Riddler, King Tut, The Siren, Egg Head, Mr. Freeze, Black Widow, Earth Kitt's Catwoman but not Penguin.  He's not my favorite in BATMAN RETURNS -- Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Keaton own that film -- but Danny Devito probably was the closest I came to liking Penguin. He's just never interested me.  Two Face is a favorite of mine in the comic books and on animated cartoons but I hated Two Face in BATMAN FOREVER.  I pretty much hate that whole movie except for a few scenes with Nicole Kidman.

And you didn't like Catwoman in the comic books?

Isaiah: No.  In this book I covered, her story was the typical nonsense of she loves Bruce and, oops, gets tripped up while trying to carry out a crime spree.  She was so boring and pathetic in the comic books and on the TV show as played by Julie Newmar.  Like I said in my review, Michelle Pfeiffer completely reconfigured the character in BATMAN RETURNS.  After that, Catwoman becomes interesting.

Benefits of both books?

Marcia: Mine was a clearance item.  That said, if you haven't read William Shatner's other memoirs, you'll probably like this one.  It's not so much bad as it is unneeded.

Isaiah: I wish they had little paperbacks like this in the grocery stores and 7-11s again.  I'd buy them.  I'm not joking.  But I also feel bad for kids because (a) not every kid can make it to a comic book store in their area and (b) not every area has a comic book store.
