Cassidy, Warren Introduce Legislation to Protect Student Veterans’ Housing Benefits During Natural Disasters
WASHINGTON U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) today introduced legislation protect student veterans from losing their housing benefits in the event a natural disaster.
Under current law, veterans’ housing benefits could end if a natural disaster closes a school for longer than a month. The Strengthening Disaster Assistance for Student Veterans Act grants the Veterans Affairs secretary the authority to extend those benefits.
“Student veterans have earned their benefits with their service to our nation,” said Dr. Cassidy, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs. “Losing those benefits because of a disaster is a failure of the law. When recovering after disaster, losing housing should not be on the list of worries for our veterans.”
“All three of my older brothers served in the military and taught me about the importance of honoring our promises to the brave men and women in uniform, who deserve the opportunity to build a future for themselves and their families,” said Senator Warren, member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee. “Student veterans should never have to worry about obstacles that can undermine their educational goals, including affording a place to live when their school is closed due to an emergency, and that’s why Senator Cassidy and I have a bipartisan bill to ensure our government keeps its promises to our student veterans.”

Resolution authorizing U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots collection passes Senate
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and Jon Tester, D-Mont., chairman and ranking member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, today announced this year’s Toys for Tots drive being held in coordination with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to collect toys for children in need.
The Senate unanimously passed a resolution introduced by Isakson and Tester allowing for the collection of charitable donations in Senate buildings during the holiday season. Senate offices are invited to collect donated toys in designated collection bins until Dec. 4, 2019. A collection bin will also be located outside of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs in Russell 412.
“I thank my Senate colleagues for allowing this special tradition to continue here in support of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots charity drive for children at the holidays,” said Isakson. “Senator Tester and I encourage continued support for this outreach opportunity.”
“It is an honor to continue the tradition of the Toys for Tots charity drive with the United States Marine Corps Reserve and Chairman Isakson,” said Tester. “This annual drive is a special opportunity for our Senate colleagues to participate in a worthy cause, bringing joy to deserving children and families around the holidays.”
Toys for Tots is an annual program conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to collect toys for disadvantaged children for the holiday season. Isakson and Tester introduced a resolution authorizing the donation drive that passed the Senate unanimously Tuesday, Nov. 12.

75 years of anti-communism/socialism/leftism (by GOP & most Dems) has yielded Trump and the current GOP. Right-wing activities were more funded, cheered; left-wing were more demonized. So the unbalanced, “vital center” of US politics destroyed itself.

A travesty of justice that Lula was imprisoned in the 1st place. Kudos to & all who went to the mat for his release. Now let’s fight for political prisoners Julian Assange & Chelsea Manning, whose brutal imprisonment makes a mockery of our justice system!
  • Lula's release is a victory for democratic forces in Brazil and around the world, and long overdue.
