Interview with workplace photographers Frank Silva and David Bacon, along with ILWU Educator and poet Gene Dennis, at the ILWU main office in San Francisco on May 18, 2016.

"What we are doing here, all three of us, is producing socially conscious art, art that is very consciously part of a social movement for change.  I don't think that is very well respected in our world, in our art world especially.  I don't think you're going to see it at the de Young.  I don't think you're going to see it at the Berkeley Art Museum.  And I think that is wrong.

"There have been periods of time in the history of this country when the art of working people was part of the mainstream, a very well respected part of our culture.  So I think that our show is fighting for something in the art world as well.  For the legitimacy, and not just for the legitimacy, but for the importance of having art that reflects the reality that people are dealing with day to day, and that is part of the movement for social change.

"That's someplace where our art world needs to go.  So I hope we get some curators from some institutions to come and see this show and think about what they're putting on their own walls.  And wondering why there's such a, what I would say, terrible absence of art that really relates to the concerns of the people you see in the photographs that we have on the walls at Photocentral [and the Asian Resource Gallery]."

Miller Statement on VA Decision to Dump Faster Firing Authority

US House Rep Jeff Miller (above) is the Chair of the House Veterans Affairs Committee.  His office issued the following last week:

Miller Statement on VA Decision to Dump Faster Firing Authority

Jun 17, 2016

Chairman Jeff Miller released the following statement today regarding the Department of Veterans Affairs’ refusal to use expanded legal authorities that enable the VA secretary to swiftly discipline senior executives for cause.
“Everyone knows VA isn’t very good at disciplining employees, but this decision calls into question whether department leaders are even interested in doing so. After all, VA is a place where egregious employee behavior, such as armed robbery participation and wait-time manipulation, is routinely tolerated. This decision underscores the urgent need for civil-service reform across the federal government that enables leaders to swiftly and efficiently discipline those who can’t or won’t do their jobs – an ability that is presently almost nonexistent.”- Rep. Jeff Miller, Chairman, House Committee on Veterans' Affairs

Leading U.S. Disability Organization Condemns Deepak Chopra for Calling Donald Trump ‘Emotionally, Maybe Mentally Retarded’

Leading U.S. Disability Organization Condemns Deepak Chopra for Calling Donald Trump ‘Emotionally, Maybe Mentally Retarded’
Ruderman Family Foundation calls on Chopra to apologize to Trump and the disability community
Boston, MA – The Ruderman Family Foundation, a national leader in disability inclusion, has strongly denounced New Age guru Deepak Chopra for his comments calling Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump ‘emotionally, maybe mentally retarded.’
“Deepak Chopra’s comments are beyond the bounds and he should immediately publicly apologize to American society and to Mr. Trump for these inappropriate and hurtful comments,” said Jay Ruderman, President of the Ruderman Family Foundation. “These comments are a slur that have the impact on people with disabilities and their families that any other slur directed at someone’s race, religion, or sexual orientation would have on their respective communities. The Foundation has criticized Mr. Trump in the past for his inappropriate mocking of a reporter with a disability. We only see it fair to speak up when someone is inappropriately disparaging Mr. Trump.”
In an interview Tuesday with FOX News Radio, the famed author and alternative medicine advocate, unleashed an attack on Trump and offended the disability community when he said that “Mr. Trump represents the emotional retardation of a 3-year-old” and later in the interview saying, “Maybe I was too kind when I said he was emotionally retarded, maybe he’s mentally retarded too.”
“In the U.S. we are currently going through a super charged political season where emotions are running extremely high. While people can and should have very strong views about the future of our country, it is never acceptable to criticize anyone by describing them with a real life disability which millions of Americans have,” added Ruderman.

Isakson Blasts VA Decision to Ignore Accountability Reforms Passed in Wake of Wait-time Scandal

Isakson Blasts VA Decision to Ignore Accountability Reforms Passed in Wake of Wait-time Scandal
‘Choosing to ignore these key reforms is a slap in the face to our veterans… the only way to combat this blatant executive overreach is for the Congress to swiftly pass the Veterans First Act.’

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, today released the following statement after being notified by the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) that it will no longer use its expedited removal authority to hold VA senior executives accountable.

The VA’s decision comes in light of the recent Justice Department decision not to defend key accountability provisions of the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014 against a constitutional challenge from a VA executive who was fired in the scandal.

“It is outrageous and unconscionable that the VA is choosing to blatantly ignore all of the accountability reforms set in place by the Veterans Choice Act.  Two years ago, veterans were forced to wait far too long for care because of incompetent executives. Since then, we’ve seen scandal after scandal emerge at the department. While some progress has been made to hold those responsible accountable, there is still a long way to go and choosing to ignore these key reforms is a slap in the face to our veterans.

“I am not going to stand by and watch the VA continue to look the other way while another one of its own gets away with egregious misconduct at the expense of veterans’ access to quality care and services. The only way to combat this blatant executive overreach is for the Congress to swiftly pass the Veterans First Act, which I introduced to bring even more accountability reform to the VA.  It is the only pending bill in Congress that can stand up to a constitutional challenge and will offer sweeping accountability reform. I urge my colleagues to pass this much-needed bill to change the culture of corruption at the VA immediately.”

Background:

Sharon Helman, the former director of the Phoenix VA Health Care System, was fired in 2014 in the wake of the VA wait-time scandal. Helman sued for her job back, saying the Veterans Choice Act is unconstitutional, partly because it does not allow executives to appeal to the full Merit Systems Protection Board, only to an administrative judge at the board.

The Justice Department announced that it is refusing to mount a defense against this claim by Helman, saying current law violates the Appointments Clause of the Constitution because the administrative judges are not presidentially appointed whereas members of the board are.

The VA informed Chairman Isakson today that because of this, the department would not use any of the accountability reforms established in the Veterans Choice Act to remove executives.

Isakson’s Veterans First Act removes the Merit Systems Protection Board from the appeal process for senior executives altogether, avoiding this constitutionality challenge. Isakson’s legislation passed the Senate VA Committee unanimously and awaits action by the full Senate.

                                                                                ###

The Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs is chaired by U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., in the 114th Congress.

Isakson is a veteran himself – having served in the Georgia Air National Guard from 1966-1972 – and has been a member of the Senate VA Committee since he joined the Senate in 2005. Isakson’s home state of Georgia is home to more than a dozen military installations representing each branch of the military as well as more than 750,000 veterans.
