Kenya Barris doesn't get it


The conversation for the need to put an end to “hueblind” casting of Black characters is long overdue. IMO this trend has been on the uptick and is honestly worse than ever in entertainment. In particular around the lack of casting of Blacktresses who are brown or dark skinned.

      Plenty Black Women have been sounding this particular alarm for a while now including & - who asked a simple ? to name dark skinned actresses under 30 who were steadily working that caused me to do a personal test -

      I made a little rule for myself that I wouldn't share any casting articles in which the casting of light-skinned Black actors was the announcement. I don't think I've shared a single casting announcement since I made the rule... which was 5 months ago...

That man could have just sat back and collected his Netflix checks and pats on the back from respectable Black folks from now until eternity. But NO! He needed to directly shame dark skinned Black people who are rightfully pointing out an obvious blind spot his projects have.

      And I’m saying something because my darker skinned siblings shouldn’t have to do this heavy lifting. I have NEVER in my life had to worry about seeing people that looked like me portrayed in positive ways on tv & movies. And by looked like me I mean my skin color specifically.

      Pretending that say Lena Horne - god rest her soul and understand I’m not diminishing her talent - doesn’t owe a good portion of her ABILITY TO SUCCEED to her skin color is offensive period. And if we agree that is true then we must dig for where those same issues exist today.

      This is not a “quota” request - it is a call to acknowledge the ways that Colorism continues to suppress the success of darker skinned creatives in PARTICULARLY in entertainment. To dismiss these repeated call ins is a slap in the face & a bold AF one at that.
