They had the appearance of independence (but not actual independence) a few years back but then the Democratic Party removed even that by having Democracy Alliance stopped funding CREW to send a message. In 2014, CREW made the laughable David Brock their board president -- message received.
No one should take them seriously.
Everything they do is a lie.
They lie to keep their tax status . They should just get honest that they are a Democratic Party tool -- and stop making the US taxpayers have to pay for their partisan moves.
