Truest statement of the week

The speakers who came to the podium all appeared to assume that the half million or more people present were all members of the Democratic Party and no one was more excited about this than filmmaker Michael Moore. He urged everyone to start calling their Congressional reps every single day, to make it a part of their morning routine, as soon as they’d made the coffee. He urged them to run for local office, city council, school board or, at the very least, Democratic Party precinct delegate.
However, something happened as Michael Moore was putting the finishing touches on his exhortation to push the old Democratic leadership aside – despite all the good things they’ve done –  and take over the Party.  When he started a sentence with, “And when we take over the DNC. . . ,” Ashley Judd suddenly burst on the stage, rudely interrupting him, and starting her overwrought “I am a nasty woman” performance. Before she was done, she had saluted a list of heroic “nasty women,” including not only Hillary Clinton but also Condolezza Rice.

Michael Moore did not say “Excuse me, Ashley, but I haven’t finished explaining how we’re going to take over the DNC.” Instead he tried to save face by shouting, “Oh my God, here’s Ashley Judd!”

-- Ann Garrison, "The Women's March in Washington D.C., as Broadcast" (COUNTERPUNCH).

Truest statement of the week II

If the size and passion of the Women’s March is indicative of a collective realization in the Black and progressive community that the time to wake up from the eight-year coma is upon us, then the election of Trump is an opportunity to mobilize thousands who couldn’t be reached under the previous administration. Sadly, many Black parents enter the Trump era with children murdered by police with impunity throughout this country.  The Democratic Party is counting on Obama amnesia and hoping that four years from now the new ground swell of activists will return the Dems to power. The larger question, however, is where were the white women and white progressives that we witnessed demonstrating after the election when Black youth were being gunned down in the streets across America? Where were the hats, money, media, buses, and entertainers when Trayvon, Michael, Sandra, Eric, John, Tanisha and Tamir were being hunted down and killed like animals?
In fact, the Women’s March didn’t focus on victims of the Obama/Clinton administration, such as environmentalist Tennie White.  Who was Tennie White?

Tennie White was targeted by the Obama Administration because of her tenacious commitment to protecting her rural Mississippi community from deadly and cancerous chemical pollution.  According to an Intercept article, Tennie is “the only person connected to two huge environmental contamination cases in Mississippi to ever serve prison time.”  Tennie’s “crime,” was that she was a community activist and not a polluter. She paid a heavy price for attempting to save her community.

-- Dr. Marsha Adebayo, "Imagine a Women’s March Against Black Genocide and the Struggle of Tennie White" (BLACK AGENDA REPORT).

Editorial: The Mosul Slog

"No!"

That's what CNN's 'objective' correspondent Elise Labott yelled in a State Department press briefing.

Remember that?

October 26th.

QUESTION: Okay. Can we stay on [the Islamic State] and the battle of Mosul?

MR KIRBY: Sure, sure.

QUESTION: Okay. Is it turning out to be like a slog, or how are things moving? How are they progressing?

ELISE LABOTT: No.

MR KIRBY: Elise, do you want to come take the podium?

ELISE LABOTT: Not today.

It was a slog.

It is a slog.

104 days.

104 day ago the operation to liberate or 'liberate' Mosul from the terrorist group the Islamic State began.

And still it continues.

And two weeks ago, the fact that eastern Mosul was liberated -- after all this time -- was presented as a great thing.

Then last week, it was presented as a good thing again because, it turns out, two weeks ago eastern Mosul hadn't been liberated.

104 days and the city is still not liberated.

But then, let's remember that the Islamic State took control of the city in June of 2014.

Yet the Iraqi government didn't even try to rescue the people until October of 2016.

Some response.

Some government.

But then the Iraqi government has never been about the Iraqi people.

It's been a bunch of exiles put in charge to do the bidding of the US government.

Media Collapse (Ava and C.I.)

With protests and fiery commentary, immigration is suddenly an issue to America.

Which surprises us only because the Deporter in Chief is no longer in the White House.

For years, Americans refused to speak out or protest as Barack Obama deported record numbers of people out of the United States.

It was February 8 2014 when the staid publication THE ECONOMIST ran "Barack Obama, deporter-in-chief" -- an article which noted:

America is expelling illegal immigrants at nine times the rate of 20 years ago (see article); nearly 2m so far under Barack Obama, easily outpacing any previous president. Border patrol agents no longer just patrol the border; they scour the country for illegals to eject. The deportation machine costs more than all other areas of federal criminal law-enforcement combined. It tears families apart and impoverishes America.

Sadly, it had already been pointed out two years before, July 2012, by Alex Nowrasteh at FORBES with "President Obama: Deporter-in-Chief:"

Obama’s DHS has so far deported more people than during the first six and a half years of George W. Bush’s administration. Just shy of 1.5 million unauthorized immigrants have been forcefully deported from the United States under Napolitano’s leadership.  These annual deportation figures are higher that at any other time in U.S. history, pushing the backlog for deportation cases to a record 314,147 this June.  The government is apprehending unauthorized immigration so quickly that it cannot effectively process them all.

By August of last year, Serena Marshall (ABC NEWS) would report, "According to governmental data, the Obama administration has deported more people than any other president's administration in history. In fact, they have deported more than the sum of all the presidents of the 20th century."

Donald Trump's insisting that the guidelines/rules for immigration from some countries (Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Iran and Sudan) be reviewed before people from those countries will be allowed to immigrate.

As Rebecca notes what is a hold has been promoted as a "ban."

Everything has to alarmist these days.

Everything has to be false.

According to the White House, President Donald Trump has issued the following executive orders:

Last week on THE VIEW, former leading lady of film (it ended in 1997) Whoopi Goldberg insisted that,  "I think the difference in what you're saying in terms of executive action is at least it took President Obama, at least a couple of months in, and this one [Donald Trump] has came in and he said, 'We're doing this and this, and this.' And I understand that,"

She apparently understands nothing.

POLITIFACT rated her statement "Pants On Fire" (as in: "Liar, liar, pants on fire!"):

Goldberg said Obama waited "at least a couple of months" to issue executive actions. That’s not correct; Obama issued an executive order on his first day in office, and 16 with in his first month.

Neither ABC nor Whoopi has issued a correction.

ABC?  Correction?

They did issue one January 24th:

Nightline aired a segment Monday night about the first three days of the new administration including Sean Spicer’s statement to the press on Saturday. As part of the report, we interviewed former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer. In editing the piece for air, his quote was shortened and as a result his opinions mischaracterized. We are fixing the piece online to include his full quote and context. We apologize and regret the error.

The correction only came after Ari Fleischer called ABC out at his Twitter account.

Last week also saw Josh Rogin (WASHINGTON POST) reported, of the State Department, "The entire senior level of management officials resigned Wednesday, part of an ongoing mass exodus of senior Foreign Service officers who don't want to stick around for the Trump era."  Yet again, a much repeated story fell apart.  Zack Beauchamp's "A viral Washington Post story about State Department resignations is very misleading" (VOX) was an attempt to correct that record.

Last week also saw the false report -- from THE WASHINGTON POST and THE NEW YORK TIMES -- that Donald Trump -- via executive order -- had lifted a ban on the use of CIA black sites.  As Betty documented at her site, this 'report' also quickly fell apart.

One has to wonder about all these reports and claims from last week that kept exploding.

What's going on?

Now more than ever?

The truth matters now more than ever?

Seems like it would have mattered, to an outlet called FOREIGN POLICY, now more than ever after (or even during) the lies that led to the Iraq War.

Hmmm.

It didn't matter then but now it matters?

What's happened?

Oh, right Donald Trump is in the White House now.

donaldslate

SLATE is a little more upfront as they beg for money, right?

They're using Donald Trump to raise money.

Which is what FOREIGN POLICY is doing.

And their lies and their fake news?

It's click bait.

It drives visitors to the site.

For all their supposed outrage over 'fake news,' they keep putting it out.

Today, Donald issued the following:

Statement Regarding Recent Executive Order Concerning Extreme Vetting
“America is a proud nation of immigrants and we will continue to show compassion to those fleeing oppression, but we will do so while protecting our own citizens and border. America has always been the land of the free and home of the brave.
We will keep it free and keep it safe, as the media knows, but refuses to say. My policy is similar to what President Obama did in 2011 when he banned visas for refugees from Iraq for six months. The seven countries named in the Executive Order are the same countries previously identified by the Obama administration as sources of terror. To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting.
This is not about religion - this is about terror and keeping our country safe. There are over 40 different countries worldwide that are majority Muslim that are not affected by this order. We will again be issuing visas to all countries once we are sure we have reviewed and implemented the most secure policies over the next 90 days.
I have tremendous feeling for the people involved in this horrific humanitarian crisis in Syria. My first priority will always be to protect and serve our country, but as President I will find ways to help all those who are suffering.”

A "ban."  It keeps being called that.

But it wasn't called that in 2011.

Glenn Greenwald (INTERCEPT) is no fan of Donald's executive order.  But he does feel it's important for the context of it to be provided:

The suggestion that Trump protected the countries with which he does business is preposterous. The reality is that his highly selective list reflects longstanding U.S. policy: Indeed, Obama restricted visa rights for these same seven countries, and the regimes in Riyadh and Cairo have received special U.S. protection for decades, long before Trump.
Beyond U.S. support for the world’s worst regimes, what primarily shapes Trump’s list is U.S. aggression: Five of the seven predominantly Muslim countries on Trump’s list were ones bombed by Obama, while the other two (Iran and Sudan) were punished with heavy sanctions. Thus, Trump is banning immigrants from the very countries that the U.S. government — under both Republicans and Democrats — has played a key role in destabilizing and destroying, as Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy, with surprising candor, noted this week:

We bomb your country, creating a humanitarian nightmare, then lock you inside. That's a horror movie, not a foreign policy.

It is critical to recognize and fight against the unique elements of Trump’s extremism, but also to acknowledge that a substantial portion of it has roots in political and cultural developments that long precede him. Immigration horror stories — including families being torn apart — are nothing new. As ABC News noted last August, “The Obama administration has deported more people than any other president’s administration in history. In fact, they have deported more than the sum of all the presidents of the 20th century.”
And the reason Trump is able so easily to tap into a groundswell of anti-Muslim fears and bigotry is because they have been cultivated for 16 years as the central fuel driving the war on terror. There are factions on both the center-left and right that are primarily devoted to demonizing Muslims and Islam. A government can get away with bombing, invading, and droning the same group of people for more than 15 years only by constantly demonizing and dehumanizing that group and maintaining high fear levels, which is exactly what the U.S. has done under two successive administrations. Both the Bush and Obama administrations ushered in all-new and quite extreme civil liberties erosions aimed primarily if not exclusively at Muslims.
Trump did not appear out of nowhere. He is the logical and most grotesque expression of a variety of trends we have allowed to fester: endless war, a virtually omnipotent presidency, unlimited war powers from spying to due process-free imprisonment to torture to assassinations, repeated civil liberties erosions in the name of illusory guarantees of security, and the sustained demonization of Muslims as scary, primitive, uniquely violent Others.

THE INTERCEPT can provide that context because they're dedicated to a little bit something more than click bait.

Last week, make no mistake, was a media collapse as THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, NIGHTLINE, THE VIEW and others ran fake news.

There's no other word for what they provided unless you want to use "lies" -- which would be accurate.

As many outlets are using Donald Trump -- fear of Donald Trump -- to raise money, it should be clear that the fake news, the lies, isn't just happening.

People are rushing to post their 'scoops,' at best, because they know they'll get high traffic from another story about that awful Donald.

At worst?

At worst, the media is intentionally being dishonest to increase their traffic.

CHER SINGS THE SONGS OF DYLAN

Did you enjoy the album CHER SINGS THE SONGS OF DYLAN?

If not, maybe you never heard it.

Maybe because it's still not released.

2cher

From 1965 to 1969, hit making solo artist Cher covered ten Dylan songs.

Surprisingly, these have never been repackaged as a solo album.

1) "All I Really Want To Do"

2) "Blowin' In The Wind"

3) "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right."

4) "Like A Rolling Stone"

5) "I Want You"

6) "The Times They Are a-Changin'"

7) "Masters of War"

8) "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You"

9) "I Threw It All Away"

10) "Lay Baby Lay"

Her work is important because she had the hit with "All I Really Want To Do" (beating The Byrds) but also because her work was important.

Cher wasn't a folkie.

She popularized Dylan's work to non-folkies.

She also wasn't Joan Baez -- Cher had hits in the sixties (and seventies, and eighties and nineties and '00s . . .).

The Whore of Babylon Tweets

Iraqi Yazidis - among the biggest ISIS victims - denied boarding on US-bound flights despite visas. Cleared Iraqi refugees also barred.

Thank you, Jane Arraf.

For those not in the know, Jane made her bones at CNN in the 90s ignoring what Saddam Hussein actually did.

She then became freelance after the Iraq War started and she refused to call out thug and two-time prime minister Nouri al-Maliki.

These days, she refuses to report anything uncomfortable to current prime minister Hayder al-Abadi.

As Eason Jordan would explain it in his infamous NEW YORK TIMES' column, CNN's practice was to bury violence so that they could remain in Iraq.  That's what Jane did.

It's what she does now.

The Islamic State is a terrorist organization.

The Yazidis are a religious group -- controversial due to their worship of the 'archangel' (seen by some as Satan) -- that's backed in the US by neocons.

Victims?

Yes.

Persecuted?

No.

Iraq does persecute religious minorities.

They go after Sunnis, who often are also Christians.

They go after the Sunnis who are Muslim.

They went after the Jews.

They went after the Mandaeans.

"They" is the Iraqi government.

When your country's government goes after you, you qualify as a refugee.

It's confusing for Jane Arraf because all her years covering Iraq have been about hiding government abuse and persecution so that she could remain in the country.

CRAPAPEDIA -- still covering for men

Egg

Back before anyone else noticed CRAPAPEDIA's sexism, we were pointing out.

Noting how they portrayed women as sluts and whores for their sex lives while the men these women were involved with were not portrayed in the same manner and often their cheating ways were not even noted.

People have woke to CRAPAPEDIA as a result.

There new trick is to minimize men's actions.

Take Spencer Ackerman:

In 2006 Ackerman was fired from TNR for "insubordination" (in TNR editor Franklin Foer's account) or "irreconcilable ideological differences" (in Ackerman's).[3]

That's how they portray it.

Now.

Before?

Before they had a full sub-section on that moment:

Firing from The New Republic

In October 2006 he was fired by The New Republic Editor Franklin Foer. Describing it as a "painful" decision, Foer attributed the firing to Ackerman's "insubordination": disparaging the magazine on his personal blog Too Hot For TNR, saying that he would "skullfuck" a terrorist's corpse at an editorial meeting if that was required to "establish his anti-terrorist bona fides" and sending Foer an e-mail where he said—in what according to Ackerman was intended to be a joke—he would “make a niche in your skull” with a baseball bat.[3]
Ackerman, by contrast, argued that the dismissal was due to “irreconcilable ideological differences”. He believed that his leftward drift as a result of the Iraq War and the actions of the Bush administration was not appreciated by the senior editorial staff.[3] Ackerman reports having no regrets over anything he wrote or said but in retrospect believes that he should have quit well before he was fired. [1]

Seems rather important.

And CRAPAPEDIA's supposed to be an online 'encyclopedia' -- strange how they keep editing out embarrassing moments for men.

Presidential Memorandum Plan to Defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

The White House issued the following yesterday:

The White House
Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release

Presidential Memorandum Plan to Defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

January 28, 2017
NATIONAL SECURITY PRESIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM – 3

MEMORANDUM FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT
               THE SECRETARY OF STATE
               THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY
               THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
               THE ATTORNEY GENERAL
               THE SECRETARY OF ENERGY
               THE SECRETARY OF HOMELAND SECURITY
THE ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OF STAFF
               THE DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE
THE ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT FOR
                  NATIONAL SECURITY AFFAIRS
               THE COUNSEL TO THE PRESIDENT
THE DIRECTOR OF THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY
THE CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF

SUBJECT: Plan to Defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, is not the only threat from radical Islamic terrorism that the United States faces, but it is among the most vicious and aggressive.  It is also attempting to create its own state, which ISIS claims as a "caliphate."  But there can be no accommodation or negotiation with it.  For those reasons I am directing my Administration to develop a comprehensive plan to defeat ISIS.

ISIS is responsible for the violent murder of American citizens in the Middle East, including the beheadings of James Foley, Steven Sotloff, and Peter Abdul-Rahman Kassig, as well as the death of Kayla Mueller.  In addition, ISIS has inspired attacks in the United States, including the December 2015 attack in San Bernardino, California, and the June 2016 attack in Orlando, Florida.  ISIS is complicit in a number of terrorist attacks on our allies in which Americans have been wounded or killed, such as the November 2015 attack in Paris, France, the March 2016 attack in Brussels, Belgium, the July 2016 attack in Nice, France, and the December 2016 attack in Berlin, Germany.
ISIS has engaged in a systematic campaign of persecution and extermination in those territories it enters or controls.  If ISIS is left in power, the threat that it poses will only grow.  We know it has attempted to develop chemical weapons capability.  It continues to radicalize our own citizens, and its attacks against our allies and partners continue to mount.  The United States must take decisive action to defeat ISIS.

Sec. 1.  Policy.  It is the policy of the United States that ISIS be defeated.

Sec. 2.  Policy Coordination.  Policy coordination, guidance, dispute resolution, and periodic in-progress reviews for the functions and programs described and assigned in this memorandum shall be provided through the interagency process established in National Security Presidential Memorandum – 2 of January 28, 2017 (Organization of the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council), or any successor.

(i)    Development of a new plan to defeat ISIS (the Plan) shall commence immediately.

(ii)   Within 30 days, a preliminary draft of the Plan to defeat ISIS shall be submitted to the President by the Secretary of Defense.

(iii)  The Plan shall include:

(A)  a comprehensive strategy and plans for the defeat of ISIS;

(B)  recommended changes to any United States rules of engagement and other United States policy restrictions that exceed the requirements of international law regarding the use of force against ISIS;

(C)  public diplomacy, information operations, and cyber strategies to isolate and delegitimize ISIS and its radical Islamist ideology;

(D)  identification of new coalition partners in the fight against ISIS and policies to empower coalition partners to fight ISIS and its affiliates;

(E)  mechanisms to cut off or seize ISIS's financial support, including financial transfers, money laundering, oil revenue, human trafficking, sales of looted art and historical artifacts, and other revenue sources; and

(F)  a detailed strategy to robustly fund the Plan.

     (b)  Participants.  The Secretary of Defense shall develop the Plan in collaboration with the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Director of National Intelligence, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, and the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism.

     (c)  Development of the Plan.  Consistent with applicable law, the Participants identified in subsection (b) of this section shall compile all information in the possession of the Federal Government relevant to the defeat of ISIS and its affiliates.  All executive departments and agencies shall, to the extent permitted by law, promptly comply with any request of the Participants to provide information in their possession or control pertaining to ISIS.  The Participants may seek further information relevant to the Plan from any appropriate source.

     (d)  The Secretary of Defense is hereby authorized and directed to publish this memorandum in the Federal Register
