As Trump and Clinton Exchange Barbs, Stein Listens to Struggling Public Housing Tenants, Homeless and Vets in Baltimore

Green Party presidential nominee Dr. Jill Stein joined Green mayoral candidate Joshua Harris, Green city council candidate Ian Schlakman, and legendary anti-poverty activist Rev. Annie Chambers for a dialogue and tour of the Douglas Homes housing project in Baltimore Thursday evening, August 25. 

This conversation between Green candidates at the national and local levels and Chambers, a community activist with a 50-year history of fighting poverty, homelessness, and unemployment, highlights the reality of poor communities living in the shadow of the nation’s capital, just a stone’s throw from Johns Hopkins University.


They discussed the effects of poverty, the movement to fight privatization of public housing and the notoriously corrupt housing authority in Baltimore, whose actions have led to gentrification and displacement of poor residents of color. They also called attention to the urgent need for real solutions to urban poverty, which affects nearly 1 in 3 children in the Baltimore area.


"Baltimore is ground zero for the fight against poverty," said Stein. "It's an inspiration to see the activists on the ground who are refusing to sit idly by while public housing is privatized and federal dollars are siphoned off into a corrupt local housing authority. And they will not accept political disenfranchisement any longer. We are so honored to be working with local hero Annie Chambers, a legend in her own time, who still leads the fight for justice in public housing. The Douglas public housing project lives up to the legacy of its namesake, Fredrick Douglass. It is organizing to end poverty and secure housing justice for their neighborhood and for all Americans."


Stein also discussed how she has made ending poverty and establishing a just and sustainable economy central to her presidential campaign, with her visionary plan for a "Green New Deal" to create 20 million jobs. She highlighted her support for Green Party candidates running for office at the local level who joined her at the event - Joshua Harris for Baltimore mayor and Ian Schlakman for city council - and praised Annie Chambers for her awe-inspiring organizing work in the local community.


"It was empowering to be part of a Green Party ticket," continued Stein. "Together we are offering solutions at the local and national level for jobs, housing, climate action, education, an end to violent policing, and a halt to the wars for oil that are draining resources that should be used for real security here at home."


"The issues that we face locally here in Baltimore are amplified on the national level," explains Joshua Harris, Green candidate for Mayor. "We are committed to grassroots change and going to war with poverty like Rev. Chambers and so many others have chosen to do, because this is about empowering people."


Ian Schlakman, Green candidate for Baltimore city council in district 12, added: "Dr. Stein's policies on crucial economic and racial justice issues are exactly the kind of leadership we need at a national level to lift up and empower the most impoverished communities in my district."

After the discussion at Douglas Homes, the group went on a tour of the neighborhood, listening to stories from local residents and organizing the local community around public housing issues and in support of Stein, Harris and Schlakman's campaigns. Dr. Stein also met Peter, a homeless veteran in the neighborhood, who expressed his support after a brief conversation with the presidential candidate.

“Kaepernick’s action was a righteous protest against of the epidemic of racism and police brutality in this country,” said Gloria La Riva. “As a socialist and proud, long-time resident of San Francisco, I salute the stand taken by SF 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who refused to stand for the National Anthem at Friday night's game.


La Riva spoke from her San Francisco office in California where she is running for U.S. President as the Peace and Freedom Party candidate. Out of the five candidates on the California ballot, she is the only worker, only person of color and only socialist. She is also on the ballot in other states across the country.


Kaepernick had explained his actions saying, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color….To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”


“I live in San Francisco, and everywhere you go you see exactly what Kaepernick is protesting,” continued La Riva. “SF police, and police around the country, systematically profile Black and Latino people, routinely brutalize working class people and in many cases kill innocent people of color.


“Kaepernick is acting in the great tradition of athletes like boxer Muhammad Ali, who resisted the draft during the Vietnam war, and Olympic sprinters John Carlos and Tommie Smith, who used their prominence as athletes to take a public stand against racism and for Black liberation, along with Australian silver medalist Peter Norman who stood in solidarity with them on the winner’s stand. 


“These athletes were willing to pay the price, whether it meant being vilified in the media and drummed out of the sport, as were Carlos, Smith and Norman, or stripped of a title and sent to prison, as was Ali.”


La Riva quoted Ali who said: “My conscience won’t let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America,” he said at the time. “And shoot them for what? They never called me n----, they never lynched me, they didn’t put no dogs on me, they didn’t rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father. … Shoot them for what? How can I shoot them poor people? Just take me to jail.”


La Riva continued, “Carlos and Smith had no regrets, despite the impact of racist reaction on their personal lives.” She quoted Carlos who said: "I went up there as a dignified Black man and said: ‘What's going on is wrong’”  and Smith who said their action "was a cry for freedom and for human rights. We had to be seen because we couldn't be heard."


La Riva concluded: “Since its formation, the U.S. capitalist class has consciously created a complex system of white supremacy to prevent working class unity and rebellion by all oppressed and exploited sectors of society. Over and above the genocide carried out against Native peoples, the enslavement of African peoples and its racist ideological justifications have been central to both extracting super-profits from oppressed people within the United States as well as preventing the entire working class from acting in its own interests. We see the fight against racism and for Black liberation as central to the struggle for the liberation of all workers and the building of a socialist society.”

2. 65% of Americans Don’t Feel Like Either Major Party Represents Them

Gary Johnson and Bill Weld actually represent the majority of America. Most often, voters side with one of the two parties not because they want to, but because they are told to fear the “other” option. According to Reuters, Forty-seven percent of Trump supporters said their main priority when voting will be to stop Clinton from reaching the White House. And 46 percent of Clinton backers said the same of Trump. 
Imagine if everyone who said “I’d vote for Johnson if he had a chance,” actually did? We would win the whole thing.

The two major party candidates spend too much of their time talking about how much America should fear the other. A third voice can force the discussion on issues, not personal attacks. 4. We Can Make History By Creating More Competitive Elections

Imagine if a third party makes it into the debates this year. That alone will change the entire political discussion. No longer will voters believe that our democracy is a simple choice between two unpopular options. We should pride ourselves on something more, like a positive discussion with new ideas. If we get in the debates in 2016, we could win the whole thing. But even if we didn’t win the election, a viable third party would finally qualify for the same ballot access that the Republican and Democratic parties receive every election. Finally, we would have more competitive elections.

If one of the other two candidates are elected, the partisan divisions will only widen. This is because both candidates play on the electorate’s fear of "the other option" in order to win votes for “their side.” On the other hand, Governors Gary Johnson and Bill Weld have little appetite for partisan politics. As former Republican governors from Democratic states, they were both re-elected by wide margins because they spent their time representing people, not just their political party.

Both parties run campaigns that try and “divide and conquer” the electorate. They do this, in part, by playing on our fears. Both candidates would have you think that the world will end if the other is elected. Only Gary Johnson will tell the truth. We are a nation that is getting better. More importantly, the unemployment rate in Massachusetts plummeted from the highest among the 11 industrialized states to the lowest by the end of his first term!
