The Intercept
was funded with some $50 million from
Omidyar. It
first hires
were Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill and Laura
Poitras - all involved in publishing the
Snowden papers and other leaks. Its first
piece was based on documents from the leaked
the NSA stack. It has since published on
this or that but not in a regular media
way. The Intercept pieces are
usually heavily editorialized and tend to
have a mainstream "liberal" to libertarian
slant. Some were highly partisan
anti-Syrian/pro-regime change propaganda.
The website
seems
to have no regular publishing schedule at
all. Between one and five piece per day get
pushed out, only few of them make public
waves. Some of its later prominent hires
(Ken Silverstein, Matt Taibbi) soon left and
alleged
that the place was run in a chaotic
atmosphere and with improper and highly
politicized editing. Despite its rich
backing and allegedly high pay for its main
journalists (Greenwald is said to receive
between 250k and 1 million per year) the
Intercept is
begging for
reader donations.

The Third Estate Sunday Review focuses on politics and culture. We're an online magazine. We don't play nice and we don't kiss butt. In the words of Tuesday Weld: "I do not ever want to be a huge star. Do you think I want a success? I refused "Bonnie and Clyde" because I was nursing at the time but also because deep down I knew that it was going to be a huge success. The same was true of "Bob and Carol and Fred and Sue" or whatever it was called. It reeked of success."

Truest statement of the week II
What Harris-Perry never mentions is that the NAACP and BYP 100 share at
least one thing in common. Both outfits funded by millions, in the case
of the NAACP, and hundreds of thousands in the case of BYP 100 dollars
from corporate one-percenters. Truth be told, the beef Harris-Perry and
BYP 100 have against the NAACP is not about any political issues
affecting the black masses. She’s just with the new crew, and NAACP is
the old crew which Harris-Perry and others like BYP 100 would like to
replace as the official spokesnegroes of Black America, and the prime
recipient of one-percenter dollars that come with that recognition.

Abu Ghraib 2.0? Iraqi army filmed abusing captives in Mosul
Published on Jun 6, 2017
Iraqi forces, leading a vigorous battle to liberate Mosul from ISIS, has been exposed torturing and abusing their captives suspected of having terrorists links, according to a photographer who has been embedded with an elite unit of the Iraqi interior ministry. READ MORE: https://on.rt.com/8dqa

We're going to pair that with the May 25th Iraq snapshot:
Wait, wait! Abuses? And it wasn't reported by Rukmini Callimachi?
Of course, it wasn't reported by her. She's THE NEW YORK TIMES' new Judith Miller -- as we pointed out February 10th.
Rukmini is very popular with Glenn Greenwald but then so was the Iraq War once upon a time.
Rukmini poured propaganda out her blow hole and the usual saps lapped it up like it was 2002 all over again.
Rukmini Callimachi fans should be suspect.
Especially if, like Glenn Greenwald, they got it wrong in real time (he supported the Iraq War).
There's a barrier between those people and critical thought.
REUTERS notes:
Iraq's interior minister on Wednesday ordered an investigation into allegations that members of the security forces had tortured, killed and abused civilians in the campaign to oust Islamic State militants from Mosul.
The inquiry was in response to a report by the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel last week that included images of apparent torture taken by a freelance photographer embedded with the Interior Ministry's elite Emergency Response Division (ERD).
Photographs showed detainees accused of affiliation with Islamic State hanging from the ceiling with their arms bent behind them, and the journalist wrote of prisoners being tortured to death, raped and stabbed with knives.
7 replies169 retweets61 likes
Rukmini was too busy socializing to get the job done. But, hey, she got a lot of free meals, didn't she?
Chad Garland (STARS AND STRIPES) notes:
Under a law known as the Leahy law, the U.S. is prohibited from supporting units accused of human rights abuses for which “credible” evidence exists. Officials with the U.S.-led anti-Islamic State coalition could not confirm the allegations against the Iraqi forces but said the United States does not currently train or equip the Emergency Response Division.
“Any violation of the law of armed conflict would be unacceptable and should be investigated in a transparent manner,” the U.S.-led international coalition in Iraq said in a statement. “Prime Minister (Haider al-Abadi) has stated that he has a zero-tolerance policy for any improper action by the Iraqi Security Forces and would thoroughly investigate any such allegations.”
RT adds:
In the article, which was in stark contrast to Western reporting from Mosul, the photographer claimed that the ERD persecuted numerous civilians on “vague” suspicions of links with IS.
The piece included photos by Arkady of people hanging from the ceiling with their arms tied up behind their backs, as well as other torture scenes.
The victims were picked up during night raids, which included rape and looting, and taken to villages outside Mosul where there were no foreign journalists, he said.
Oh, Rukmini.
If only someone could have warned us in real time that Rukmini was reporting lies . . .
Oh, wait.
I did.
But don't worry, Rukmini will be fine. (A) THE NEW YORK TIMES has lied about Iraq repeatedly and (B) Glenn Greenwald will continue to support her.
At some point, the world's going to notice that except for the Ed Snowden dumped in his lap, Glenn's not accomplished anything.
As Rebecca asked earlier this week "remember when 'the intercept' was supposed to be an important outlet? "
No start-ups had more money and no start-up has done less.
At this point, he's making Tina Brown's TALK look like an investigative journal.

TV: The first and second most lucky people of the week
The luckiest person in the world last week had to be Scott Pelley.
CBS fired him as anchor of THE CBS EVENING NEWS.
This after he was the 'answer' to the network, remember?
May 2011, it was announced he would replace Katie Couric as anchor and he would rescue the news.
Reality: CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY comes in third of the three broadcast network's evening news programs.
He was supposed to be the answer but six years later, he got eased out with the cover story that CBS NEWS valued him so much that they needed him to focus on 60 MINUTES.
Focus on 60 MINUTES?
We're supposed to believe they were living in fear of SUNDAY NIGHT WITH MEGYN KELLY?
"With who?" most would ask.
Megyn became a star on FOX NEWS.
We're not insulting her for it, we're just noting that the broadcast networks -- big four -- have bigger audiences than even 'cable news' channels.
Here's another reality about 'cable news' -- it's pretty much all talk show.
It's really not reporting.
60 MINUTES, by contrast, is a news magazine.
Sure, it's always had fluff.
Each incarnation, for instance, generally offers fluff from an elderly fool.
Up until late 2011, Andy Rooney filled that time with a 60 MINUTES segment entitled "A Few Minutes With Andy Rooney." These days, the segment is too many minutes with 75-year-old Charlie Rose.
But that nonsense aside, it's a news magazine.
After "who is Megyn Kelly," the next question should have been: "What is SUNDAY NIGHT WITH MEGYN KELLY?"
It's not a news magazine.
Megyn had a big get on Sunday: Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
But he spoke via a translator.
She grabbed at fame as a debate moderator asking pointed questions of Donald Trump.
But pointed doesn't play well with an interpreter.
It was slow TV, to say the least.
But what was worse was her use of Harry Smith and Cynthia McFadden.
These are news magazine names?
Forever and a day, Harry Smith was the host of CBS' failed morning program. Cynthia McFadden? When you're more known for rumors about how close you really were to Katharine Hepburn (who had many affairs with women) than for any story you've ever broken, why are you being hired for a news magazine?
SUNDAY NIGHT WITH MEGYN KELLY lost the ratings battle to 60 MINUTES at the start of the week. But even worse, it set up an image that it's now going to have to shake. It's another show of talking heads. It's not a news magazine.
It may want to become that but, in what was probably its biggest outing, America saw the show was about as hard hitting as IN STYLE MAGAZINE.
Megyn should consider herself lucky because -- like Scott Pelley -- she's gotten so little media attention in the last few days.
Instead, all the oxygen in the room was sucked up by Kathy Griffin, Bill Maher's use of the N-word and CNN's resident cannibal throwing tantrums on Twitter.

CRAPAPEDIA will say anything
It started easily enough. Saturday noshing as a group. Jim tosses out a factoid gleamed from WIKIPEDIA, in 1983 only one woman broke the top ten on BILLBOARD's album chart (BILLBOARD 200): Donna Summer.
The response from Ava and C.I. was loud and, yes, profane.
Sensing he was on the losing end of a debate, Jim desperately pulled up the Donna Summer page on WIKIPEDIA and read off:
Summer recorded and delivered the album She Works Hard for the Money and Polygram released it on its Mercury imprint in 1983. The title song became a major hit, reaching No. 3 on the US Hot 100, as well as No. 1 on Billboard's R&B chart for three weeks. It also garnered Summer another Grammy nomination, for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Unconditional Love", which featured the British group Musical Youth, and "Love Has a Mind of Its Own" did not crack the top 40. The album itself was certified Gold, and climbed to No. 9 on the Billboard 200 chart; the highest chart position of any female artist in male-dominated 1983.
Remember, kids, it's CRAPAPEDIA.
November 5, 1983, Bonnie Tyler's FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF LIGHT made it to number 4 on the BILLBOARD 200 chart.
July 23, 1983, Stevie Nicks' WILD HEART made it to number 5 on the BILLBOARD 200 chart.
January 5, 1983, Pat Benatar's GET NERVOUS made it to number 4.
December 24, 1983, Linda Rondstadt's WHAT'S NEW? made it to number 3.
Ava and C.I., off the tops of their heads, named four albums by female artists -- four albums that all made it higher than Donna Summer's SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY in 1983.
CRAPAPEDIA, kids, it'll lie to you every time.

From The TESR Test Kitchen
"Get thee back into The TESR Test Kitchen!" e-mailed Brady. "You covered ice cream, but what about low carb, low sugar ice cream? Some of us have diabetes!"
You are exactly right, Brady.
So back we went with HALO TOP.
A pint of HALO TOP Birthday Cake ice cream was a revelation.
First, when you take the lid off, you'll see a smiley face indented in the top of the ice cream.
Cute.
The first spoonful?
Perfection.
However, stop by the half-way mark.
Toss it out or toss it in the freezer.
But do not continue eating.
By the half-way mark, it tastes metallic and crummy.
Half of us tossed it in the freezer.
That group tried eating it later.
It was good for many spoonfuls but near the bottom you'll again be confronted with that metallic taste.
Eat with caution.

The hate merchant of Treehouse Shakers
Why should anyone support TREEHOUSE SHAKERS.COM?
They didn't have the talent to become performers in the dance world.
So they became a 'troupe' for children.
But thing is, they're hateful adults and no parent should want them around their children.
Take this kook.
Failed at everything and now she milks the 'kids route' for money.
And when she's not begging parents and taxpayers?
She's trashing people.
Here she is trashing -- and lying -- about Jill Stein (Green Party presidential candidate in 2016).
She's a traitor?
That's what McEwin says.
Heres McEwin attacking a journalist (Nomiki Konst).
And here she is attacking White men.
Strange because White men are the biggest part of her meager professional resume.
Mara McEwin (Artistic Director, Co-Founder, Director, Performer and Writer) is originally from Wyoming. Since living in NYC, she co-founded Treehouse Shakers with Emily Bunning. She has written, directed and acted in almost all of Treehouse Shakers’ 13 dance-plays. In 1999, Mara co-created Niñopalooza an all day rock concert for kids and Niño Nada, a summer festival of children’s work that was acclaimed by the New York Times. Some of Mara’s other favorite acting credits include Bloomsday on Broadway with Stephen Colbert and Alec Baldwin, which aired on NPR as well as The Sandpiper at Symphony Space, NYC. She has performed with numerous companies such as Manhattan Theatre Club, Playwrights Theater, Eugene O’Neill by-the- Sea- Festival, 13th St. Theatre, Todo Con Nada, Chekhov Vaudeville Festival, among others. She has worked in films, print, television and commercials. Mara was named “Best Storyteller of New York” by New York Press, and has been an artist in residence for 18 years throughout NYC’s public and private schools. As a storyteller she has performed throughout the nation’s schools, festivals, theaters, colleges, and community events. She has been a featured teller for F.I.T’s Toy Design Department, Baby Gap stores, Miramax, Turtle Pond Publications, Chocolate Sauce Publishing, and the Tribeca Film Festival. She was the subject for a qualitative dissertation on the inclusion of storytelling in the classroom by Dr. Barb O’Neill and co-created Brooklyn Kindergarten Society’s storytelling curriculum. Currently, she is a writer, voice-over artist and story consultant for Activity Works, an interactive educational video-web series for classrooms across the U.S. Mara serves as a board member on the International Performing Arts for Youth (IPAY.) To read more about life with Treehouse Shakers, visit Mara’s Treehouse.
That's Mara McEwin -- and visit the link to see why she never made it professionally (ugh, what a face).
It's time NYC schools cut off TreeHouse and Mara McEwin.
There are better troupes and there are certainly less hate filled ones.
