Isakson Statement on U.S. Ransom Payment to Iran
“This administration's ransom deal, subsequent lies to the American people are reprehensible and dangerous”
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today released
the following statement regarding the confirmation by the U.S.
Department of State that its $400 million cash payment to Iran was
conditional on the release of American prisoners by Iran, a fact that
was originally denied by the Obama administration:
“Today’s
admission by the State Department confirms what I’ve said all along:
The Obama administration will stop at nothing to defend its failed
foreign policy agenda, going so far as to hide from the American people
its dangerous dealings with Iran. This administration's ransom deal and
its subsequent lies to the American people are reprehensible and
dangerous.”
On Aug. 9, 2016, Isakson wrote to U.S Secretary of State John Kerry urging
the Secretary of State John Kerry to provide the American people with
more information on the secret $400 million cash payment to Iran made by
the Obama administration concurrently with negotiations to release
several Americans who were wrongfully imprisoned by Iran.
